We’ve talked about tacos around here a few times. But a 31 ways to raise ’em right blog binge wouldn’t be complete here without an ode to Taco Tuesday. Here it is:
If you have children, you should have to host Taco Tuesday. You can decide how often, what the logistics might be, and even what to eat, but Taco Tuesday is the best way to stay connected to your kids.
We have been hosting Taco Tuesday for a lot of years, even before we realized what we were doing. Once a month, on the last Tuesday of the month, we open our house to whoever we have come face to face with that month, to the neighbors, the kids in our hood, our kids’ coaches and teachers, and anyone else my kiddos come home with. Then it gets a little complex.
We eat tacos.
I know what you’re thinking. That’s a little intense. But it isn’t. It’s a game changer.
There’s this thing that happens between us and our kids and the people they call their people. It’s called space, and it’s the family nemesis. You need to meet that guy head on. You need to call him out and punch him in the neck. He doesn’t belong here.
When you meet your kid’s coach in your dining room over chips and guacamole, his words to your child are different. When teenagers come over and snuggle in front of your fire pit, and they look you in the eye and hear stories about your family, they think twice about what they offer your kid. And when a kid comes into your home and feels Jesus without you having to give them a Bible tract, they are changed forever no matter what their home life is like.
It’s the most simple and complex part of our lives. It’s a ministry everyone in the family is part of. Plus. It’s delicious. Like for reals delish. Keep it simple. You’ll be amazed at the difference a simple dinner can make.
I would love to hear from you if you host Taco Tuesday or if you are thinking about it. What do you love about it?
